Methanol test kits and saliva alcohol tests: what is the difference?
Methanol tests examine a drink sample for methanol; personal saliva alcohol tests such as AlkoSafe screen saliva for alcohol. An AlkoSafe result cannot establish whether a drink is safe to consume.
If you suspect methanol poisoning, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
What each test examines
| Question | Methanol test for a drink | Personal saliva alcohol test: AlkoSafe |
|---|---|---|
| What is sampled? | The drink or liquid being examined. | The person’s saliva. |
| What is assessed? | Methanol, or a relationship between methanol and ethanol, depending on the method. | Alcohol in saliva, interpreted with the product’s colour guide. |
| When is it used? | When investigating the composition of a liquid. Follow the specific test’s instructions. | For a personal alcohol self-check, following the pack instructions. |
| What does the result mean? | A finding within that test’s scope and detection limits. | A personal screening indication. The stated detection threshold is 0.20‰; the result is not an exact blood alcohol reading. |
| What does it not establish? | The person’s alcohol level or the overall safety of the drink. | Whether the drink contains methanol, whether poisoning is present, or whether driving is safe. |
| Who makes it? | This is a test category with product-specific manufacturers; check the named manufacturer and instructions. The cited research covers particular assays. | CROM TEST develops AlkoSafe. |
Why a colour change does not identify a safe drink
Studies of methanol detection evaluate particular methods against reference analysis. Their findings do not validate every product described as an “alcohol test kit”, and they do not validate AlkoSafe for checking drinks for methanol.
An AlkoSafe result does not establish the absence of methanol and should not be used to decide whether to consume a suspicious drink.
Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry warns that colour, taste and smell cannot reliably identify methanol. A home test result must not be treated as a general certificate of drink safety.
What AlkoSafe’s 0.20‰ threshold means
AlkoSafe lists a detection threshold of 0.20‰ and uses a colour guide for an approximate personal screening indication. This threshold does not describe the alcohol percentage in a bottle or a methanol safety limit.
A result cannot establish fitness to drive or replace official breathalyser or blood testing, medical advice, employer procedures or traffic law.
Questions about alcohol tests
How do you do an alcohol test at home?
Choose the sample and purpose first: a personal saliva self-check and an investigation of a drink’s composition require different tests. AlkoSafe is for personal saliva screening. If methanol poisoning is suspected, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.
How is the alcohol content of a drink measured?
Analytical methods can measure components of a drink; the cited methanol studies use gas chromatography as a reference. A saliva strip does not give the drink’s alcohol percentage or establish its safety.
What is a saliva test?
It is a test that uses saliva as the sample. What it detects depends on the product. AlkoSafe is a personal alcohol screening strip; its result does not diagnose methanol poisoning.
What does a breathalyser measure?
A breathalyser assesses alcohol using a breath sample. It answers a different question from analysis of a drink for methanol. AlkoSafe uses saliva and does not replace official breathalyser testing.

AlkoSafe explains its own product on this page. No methanol kit is recommended.
